The Highs And Lows Of Fandom

Let's face it.  Being a fan isn't always easy.  Sure when your team wins you feel like you're walking on air.  But when they lose, it takes the wind right out of your sails.  And when your favorite team happens to be a perennial cellar dweller, it can be heartbreaking.  I've been on both sides of the coin.  I have a football team I cheer for that has won Super Bowls.  Then I have a baseball team that has only made the playoffs twice in its entire fifty-four year history.  But those teams go through cycles.  Sometimes my football team has a down year but my baseball team has a breakout year.  And other times its the reverse.  But through it all, I stick with my teams.  Because I know that even though defeat is hard to swallow, eventually I'll be able to taste victory once again, and it will be even more sweet.

What I Love Most About Sports

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, wild comebacks, and dominating performances.  These are all good reasons to like sports, but to me, there's one reason to like sports more than any other--because in sports, unlike in life, any team can win on any given day.
How many times have we seen it?  Unranked Div 1-A Appalachian State taking down Michigan in college football a few years back.  The barely over .500 Giants taking down the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl.  Countless Cinderella upsets in the NCAA Tournament.  We see amazing underdog upsets in every sport every year.
Now how often do you see that in life?  Very, very rarely.  Usually the top dogs stay on top.  Usually the little guy remains on the bottom.  And that's why sports make for the greatest of escapes, because out of nowhere an upset can happen.  No matter how insane the match up seems on paper, they still have to play the games.  And sometimes in those games, unlike life, the little guy can taste victory.

Why I write underdog love stories

I can't relate to Alpha's.  Big, burly, cocky guys full of bravado. The guy of guy that walks around with endless swagger.  That's probably because I grew up feeling second best myself.  I never felt like I could measure up.  That I would always be a runner up in the world.  In short, I was an underdog.  Well frankly, I still am.  And in sports more than in any other part of life, the underdogs seem to have a chance.  In basketball, we've seen tiny schools that barely anyone has ever heard of topple the best in the league come March Madness.  In football, teams that have gone 8-8 and barely squeaked into the playoffs have gone home with Super Bowls.   In hockey all you have to do is get into the playoffs and it seems like all bets are off.
People love underdog stories because so often we feel like underdogs ourselves.  And that's why I write them.  Because I want to believe that I can topple the giants.  I want to believe that I can defy the odds.  I want to believe that I can come out on top.
